THE CONQUEST OF QUERÉTARO.

A race Otomi Indian whose origin was the village of Nopala near Jilotepec, eventually became very important piece for the Spanish conquistadors could achieve its goal. Conín was his name and was an excellent businessman and negotiator, traveled frequently to the area called La Cañada. At that site settled tribes Chichimecas receiving Conín as a friend, handing animal skins in exchange for salt and grains.
For the year of 1529, and a group of Conin Otomí families decided to settle in the region near La Canada, as in many rocks that site had called him Queréndaro, tarasco language means "place where there are rocks."
When Don Hernan Perez de Bocanegra returned from Michoacan, accompanied by a Franciscan religious that he entrusts to catechizing the region, took advantage of the diplomatic skills of Conin, who converted to Catholicism and was named Spanish Fernando de Tapia. This man was responsible for convincing the tribes of the region Otomi Jilotepec to be aliarán to Conín and assist him in the complicated task of conquering and catechizing the residents of La Cañada Chichimecas.
The conquering army, commanded by Fernando de Tapia (Conin), departed San Juan River on July 23, 1531 and camped in the Cerro Colorado which is located near the Valley of Queretaro. From this place of Fernando Tapia sent emissaries for the interview with the Cacique of the Chichimecs Juan Bautista Criado. And in Parliament, it was agreed that the submission would be peaceful, but to show the strength of the two groups would take place in a bout which pelearía the same number of men, unarmed, to cuerrpo body, using only his arms, the feet and mouth.
At dawn the next day, July 25, 1531, was given to the principle battle, the two groups fought throughout the day and the evening had not yet victor .. The Spaniards to realize the superiority of the Chichimecs and found them inferior, began to cry out for help, invoking its patron saint Mr Santiago, at the time the sky darkened, the sun was eclipsed, the stars came out and appeared in the sky a red, four rods as high as his side the Apostle Santiago brioso mounted on a horse. The Chichimecs to realize this surrendered. Since then, the city has carried the name of the very noble and loyal city of Queretaro. In the coat of arms of the city shows an oval in the centre of which is a cross, taking his side to the Apostle Santiago on horseback, and in the barracks higher, putting the Sun and the sky covered with stars.
Queretaro is the name that gave the Spaniards the previous Queréndaro, whose meaning was "Place where there are rocks.".
